2009 Connect-World Digital Media Award: Acceptable Formats
2009 Awards closing date: 31st December 2008
NOTE: The contents of this page are subject to change. Please check before submitting your application.
One of the aims of the Digital Media Awards is to provide a showcase for talented students and their projects. A condition of entry is that permission be given to Connect-World to display the winning projects on its website without limitation. (Students will continue to own copyright of their work.) To that end, all entries must be submitted in one or more of the formats below. All media should be submitted on standard DVDs*, audio CDs**, CD-R or DVD-R, formatted for Windows PCs.
NOTE: Label all discs with your name and full contact details plus the title of the work. Please ensure that your project tells “a story of global development”.
Submissions may use a combination of Video, Animations, Audio, Images, Documents, and Web Projects. Detailed format information is below.
Video
- Microsoft AVI or DV AVI (.AVI), QuickTime (.MOV), MPEG 1 or MPEG 2
- Executables compiled for Windows PCs (.EXE)
- Shockwave (.DCR) or Flash (.SWF) accompanied by any linked-to movies, etc. Links should use relative paths so that the application works on the disc and when the files are uploaded to the web. Linked-to multimedia files should be in one of the other formats listed on this page. Please test shockwave or flash projects by uploading them to the web before submission.
(Note that Macromedia Director files should be saved as shockwave or executable files.)
At least one version of the entry should be of a suitable format and size for putting on the web for viewing or download. Selecting a low frame rate and frame size will help to compress a video. If videos are submitted in more than one format, then the least compressed version may be judged, while the version (or versions) most suitable for the web will be used for display online or made available for download. However, it is not obligatory to submit entries in multiple formats.
*DVDs and VCDs may be submitted only if accompanied by a "data" CD or DVD-R with the video file(s) in one of the formats above.
Animations
- Animated GIF (.gif), flash (.swf), shockwave (.dcr) or executables compiled for Windows PCs (.exe)
Audio
- Uncompressed: Windows PCM (.WAV)
- Compressed: MP3 PRO (.MP3) or Windows Media Audio Standard (.WMA)
If both compressed and uncompressed versions are submitted, then the uncompressed version will be judged, while the compressed version will be used for display on the web. However, it is not obligatory to submit entries in multiple formats.
**Audio CDs may be submitted only if accompanied by a "data" CD with the audio file(s) in one of the formats above.
Images
Documents
- .HTML, .PPT, .PDF, .TXT, or .DOC
Note: This is a multimedia award. Document formats are most likely to be successfully used in combination with other formats. Text only submissions are ineligible.
Web Projects
Projects that are submitted as one or more web pages may utilise a range of standard web formats in addition to any of the media formats above. Web pages should be viewable with Internet Explorer version 7 and Firefox version 3 and should not require the user to download additional components or software other than that which may be required to access some of the media formats above (e.g. Adobe reader for .PDFs).
Links should use relative paths so that the application works on the disc and when the files are uploaded to the web. Please upload the files to the web beforehand to test.
